An HIV-positive man who prosecutors say secretly videotaped sexual encounters with 131 young men was sentenced to life in prison for attempting to entice a 15-year-old boy to engage in sex acts.
During his trial, prosecutors alleged Willie Atkins knew of his condition yet endangered dozens of partners by rarely using condoms, and that there was no evidence that he warned anyone that he was HIV-positive.
Atkins was sentenced Friday for attempting to entice a minor for sex, which is punishable by up to 10 years in prison. Because Atkins had two previous felony convictions, for aggravated robbery and firearms possession, he was eligible for the life sentence.
According to authorities, Atkins lured young men to his apartment by offering them jobs to work for his landscaping company, but authorities have had difficulty identifying the men. Jurors at his trial saw clips from 90 hours of sexually explicit videotape.
His defense attorney, Richard Franklin, said Atkins was being unfairly targeted.
“They want to say Willie Atkins gave all these people AIDS, spread HIV all over the place,” Franklin said. “They can’t be living in some parallel universe where they’ve never heard of AIDS. It can’t be his fault alone, if he has any fault at all.”
The “dangerous activity” each side engaged in “cancels each other out,” he said.
Lord bless you everyone! I just wanted to let you know SBM is still around - going loud and strong!
I’ve been involved in multiple projects that have pulled me away from my regular blogging routine, but hey — things change.
The ministry of SBM is going stronger than ever. The calls for help coming in seem to be increasing weekly.
A lot going on this week with Wednesday - GLSEN’s “Day of Silence” - April 18th. I’m one of the Member Organizations of www.NotOurKids.com calling on parents to keep their kids home from school on Wednesday IF and only IF the school is allowing the DOS protest to take place.
Thursday, I’m speaking in Massachusetts and Friday - the family and I - are off for a little two day get-a-way.
SBM’s www.TheParentsGroup.com is going INCREDIBLE!!! I cannot believe how this has taken off and the ministry that is being done! We have former homosexual men and women, parents of children involved in homosexuality, married couples with a spouse struggling with homosexuality — and so much more! I encourage ANYONE who has a loved one or friend in the homosexual lifestyle to join. You must apply for membership since it is a private online community.
Besides that, I’m healed from the surgery I had 2 months ago. My mother-in-law is doing much better after her stroke and the KIDS ARE HOME FOR SPRING BREAK!!!! They are probably driving their GRANDMA NUTS!!!! (I hope not!
)
Many of you know I am a recording artist (3 Cd’s out, all w/singles playing nationally on Christian Radio) — so, since I write music, I’ve written a song for American Idol. They have a competition going on and the A&R people will select the 20 best songs suited for the singers and have America vote. I won’t mention the name yet — in case it does make it into the 20. Many around me believe it has a very good chance at doing so. The song glorifies the Lord in every word. It’s written in a way that it will offend no one. We are praying for one AI hopeful (the one who has the most outstanding voice) and is also not ashamed to publicly say on AI she IS “born again” and her goal in life is “through everything I do, to glorify my Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.” THAT’S the kind if person we support! So, pray for me — this song was written on my knees in prayer - for her to do what she said. We’ll see!
That’s about it for now. I’m really late leaving and gotta go. Wishing you ALL God’s blessings and I’ll try to get back to blogging here more often.
Love in Christ,
Stephen Bennett
